The former capital and, without doubt, the most attractive small town in the Algarve! There is still plenty of evidence of its historical past - the ancient town walls,
Prince Henry the Navigator's fortress from which the caravels set sail on their
great voyages of discovery, the old slave market and the Golden Church. The restoration of the town centre has been tastefully done, retaining the narrow
cobbled streets and lovely squares which bustle with open air cafes, restaurants,
smart boutiques and antique shops, pavement artists and street entertainers. There are even some discos. Daily fish market; open air market on Saturdays.
Cultural centre, art galleries, potteries. A lovely cobbled promenade stretches the length of the estuary to the new Marina
and little boats ferry visitors across the estuary to the long sandy beach of Meia
Praia which stretches to Alvor. To the west is the unspoilt headland of Ponta da
Piedade - wonderful walking with spectacular sea views and amazing rock formations. Below these cliffs are the tiny coves of Praia D'Ana, Praia Camilo, Canavial - all accessed by steps, and round the headland is the larger Porto do Mos beach. A variety of boat trips are available from the Marina or you can take one of

Although the once busy little fishing village has now developed into a popular

This is a family orientated village and there is a good selection of cafs and
restaurants, a few small supermarkets and generally a quiet and relaxed atmosphere.
Just 10 minutes walk from the village is the Sports Centre with tennis courts, squash
courts, swimming pool and many organised children's activities. Horse riding can
be found nearby and the challenging beautiful Parque de Floresta Golf and Leisure

and early Summer and the whole of the magnificent west coast is then at your doorstep.

 The charming market town of Aljezur lies in the heart of the Costa Vicentina Nature Reserve stretching from Sagres in the south up the spectacular west coast into the Alentejo region. Unspoiled by tourism the area offers magnificent sandy beaches such as Armado and Bordeira at Carrapetiera (particularly popular with surfers); Praia de Amoreira; Monte Clerigo and Arrifana around Aljezur, and Odeceixe a little further north.

It
is amazing that this little sleepy agricultural village, lying inland between the
popular resorts of Praia da Luz and Burgau (both 4 kms), should have escaped the
tourist development of recent years.

kms west from Lagos, Burgau is a small, quiet fishing village where the local fishermen
calmly tend their nets on the slipway which is packed with brightly coloured fishing
boats and countless lobster pots. Steep, narrow cobbled streets lead down to the
sheltered, golden beach which has an excellent beach bar with sun beds, shades,
paddle boats and windsurfers for hire.
Salema is situated a few kilometres further west from Burgau and for enthusiastic
walkers can be reached with a bracing trek across the cliff tops. There are small
beaches tucked in the rugged coastline along the way and Salema has a long, beautiful
golden beach ideal for families. These once very active fishing coves have embraced
tourism gently and now provide ample facilities for the slightly more relaxed holiday-maker,
especially those with young children.
Many visitors are now choosing to stay a little further inland, away from the dense coastal development, and one of the best areas to discover rural Algarve and still be within easy reach of beaches is the area Porches / Alcantarilha, Algoz, Messines, Silves and Monchique.
The popular beaches of Gal. Armacao de Pera, Senhora da Rocha and Marinha are all accessible and there are plenty of attractions for children - water slide parks, Zoo Marine, Krazyworld. The historic and gracious town of Silves is certainly worth a visit as are the quaint villages of Algoz, Messines and the
The whole area is scenically beautiful encompassing vineyards and orange groves; eucalyptus, pine, mimosa and many other trees as well as a wide selection of birds and other wild life including wild boar!; charming picturesque cottages; terraced small-holdings; churches and ruined medieval castles. 
The beaches are backed by sand dunes or craggy cliffs and the green rolling hills beyond reach across to the hills of Monchique. Aljezur, dominated by its ruined medieval castle has a market, small shops and several restaurants. The municipal museum and Church of Mercy are worth visiting. There is nowhere better to enjoy freshly caught fish and seafood specialities such as percebes (goose barnacles) than in one of the many excellent beach bars.
