THE ALGARVE - WEATHER, CLIMATE, BEACHES

Portugal lies in the extreme South West of Europe occupying approx. 1/6 of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 88,944 sq. kms. With approx. 550 kms North - South and 150 kms West - East, it has an enormously long Atlantic coastline, perfect for secluded beach vacations. Much of the coastline has beautiful sandy beaches, often with spectacular cliffs. In the most Southern Algarve region the beaches vary from being wide and flat in the eastern area, to smaller bays and coves backed by cliffs in the western area.
Whilst the popular resorts are obviously busy in the peak season there are many remote, less frequented beaches to be discovered. Please click HERE for details on the resorts on the Algarve.
The main beaches have life guards, excellent beach bars and many hold the European Blue Flag denoting quality of water, cleanliness and safety. The dramatic west coast beaches are excellent for surfing but do have dangerous currents which require caution.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE

The Southern Algarve has a temperate climate - similar to California and South Africa. Further North, winters are usually wetter and cooler. Summers, particularly away from the coast, can be hotter.
